Spinning Industry
Spinning is the process that converts fibre to yarn. Yarn is the raw material for weaving and knitting. Tamilnadu leads the Country in the number of spindles and volume of yarn produced with 55% of the total spinning mills, 43% of the total spindles installed and 60% of the rotors. Though Tamilnadu leads the country in the number of spindles in India, the yarn productivity in the state is lesser than the rest of the Country, mainly due to the use of old machinery.
As the quality demand in downstream industries like weaving and knitting has increased significantly due to technological upgradation, the spinning units also need to upgrade their equipment to improve output quality and sustain the business. Therefore, the industry needs assistance for modernization and installing cutting-edge technology. Accordingly, the Government of Tamil Nadu provides a 6% interest Subvention to spinning mills to modernise the vintage machinery under the “Tamilnadu New Integrated Textile Policy – 2024.”
At present the following six cooperative spinning mills are functioning with a capacity of 1.18 lakh spindles.

Kanyakumari District Cooperative Spinning Mills Ltd., Aralvaimozhi.
Pudukkottai District Cooperative Spinning Mills Ltd., Aranthangi.
Krishnagiri District Cooperative Spinning Mills Ltd., Uthangarai, Krishnagiri.
Ramanathapuram District Cooperative Spinning Mills Ltd., Achankulam, Ramanathapuram.
